Top of the Pops bows out with 3.9m viewers

LONDON - Long-standing BBC music show 'Top of the Pops' bid a fond farewell to 3.9m viewers last night after 42 years, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The nostalgia-led final show special was shown on BBC Two at 7pm and featured the return of the show's most famous hosts, including Sir Jimmy Saville, Dave Lee Travis and Mike Read among others.

The final show was a disappointment to some because it comprised entirely of clips from the show's long run, with acts shown including the Rolling Stones and Abba.

Competition on other channels came from 'Emmerdale' on ITV 1 at 7pm, which drew in an audience of 5.7m, or a 33% share of total audience, and BBC One documentary 'Sharks: Great Whites in Great Britain', which hauled in 3.8m viewers, achieving a 20% share of total audience for the channel.

On Channel 4, 'Lost' at 6.45pm only claimed an audience of 0.5m viewers, an under-performing 3% share of total audience, even beaten by a repeat on Five of Paul Verhoeven's futuristic science fiction film 'Robocop', which attracted 0.9m viewers on average at 6.55pm, before being replaced by 'Five News'.

Later in the evening, 'Love Island' went up against a repeat of film 'The Truman Show'. 'Love Island' recorded 2.2m viewers or a 13% audience share, while the Jim Carrey comedy drama pulled in 2.9m, or a 17% share.

At 9pm, 'Big Brother' attracted an audience of 4m, or 18% of the viewing audience.
