The service combines bulletins on www.timesonline.co.uk and www.wisden.com with a live voice mobile phone report at the close of play each day and regular text message updates.
The report is claimed to be the first of its kind in the sports sector. For £1.50 a message, users get the update at the end of play report from The Times' cricket correspondent, Christopher Martin-Jenkins.
The message will be sent daily to the user's mobile phone at 8am.
Throughout the day - and night, if users request it - there will be regular SMS updates on the state of play, or users can opt for a daily email.
There is also an option to receive updates from Martin-Jenkins via a PDA. Users must register on either of the sites.
The Ashes service is currently being promoted in The Times, on the Times Online network and on other News International web sites, such as The Sun Online, as well as on FHM.com.
An online betting service is being run in conjunction with bookmaker Paddy Power (www.paddypower.com).
The service runs until the end of January. Between 15 October and 12 November, the cricket sites attracted 680,000 unique users and 6.7 million page impressions between them, according to Times Online.
