Heart FM owner Chrysalis hit by softness of radio market

LONDON – Chrysalis, the owner of radio stations Heart and LBC, has said that its revenues have dipped 3% compared with last year.

In a trading update issued today, covering the period from September to January, Chrysalis said the performance of its radio division was not as good as that of its music and book publishing divisions.

The company said the dip was due to specific softness in the national radio advertising marketplace and the lower audience figures generated by the third-quarter 2004 Rajar survey.

Chrysalis chairman Chris Wright said: "We have seen signs of improvement in the national advertising market since the beginning of January."

Chrysalis's update mirrors those of GWR and Capital Radio issued yesterday. GWR reported advertising sales for the fourth quarter of 2004 were down 3% on 2003. Capital reported that its revenues for the fourth quarter of 2004 were down 4% on 2003.

Shares in Chrysalis were down by 1% this morning, trading at 181.75p, a 2p fall.
