Tempus founder to launch media investment firm

LONDON – Chris Ingram, who last year sold his media-buying firm Tempus to Sir Martin Sorrell's WPP Group for £432m, is to launch an investment vehicle to invest mainly in media firms.

The first investment by the firm, Genesis Investments, will be in backing a management buyout of the collapsed Sunday football newspaper The Non-League Paper. The paper went into administration in June.

Ingram's interest in football is well known -- he is an investor in non-league club Woking FC. "I went along with my dad when I was 13 and have been a fan ever since. When I heard it was in difficulties, well... there was no way this club was going to be allowed to fail, no way."

Ingram quit WPP in July after seeing through the merger of his CIA media agency with WPP Group's The Media Edge.

Tempus, the publicly quoted holding company, became the subject of a long-running battle last year as WPP trumped an initial white knight offer for Tempus made by Havas.

WPP later tried to pull out of the deal when the French firm failed to match its increased bid, leading to a bitter war of words.

Ingram has been quiet on his plans for the future since he left Tempus and the agency he founded in 1976: "The industry, structurally, is getting me excited again like it was in the 70s. I'm very interested now in what's happening in marketing communications. To me it doesn't make sense and I'm always someone who eventually puts my money where my mouth is. This whole business is practically wrapped up by seven or eight companies globally. Now, is that the way it's meant to be? I sure as hell don't think so."

As for simply enjoying his money, he told ±±¾©Èü³µpk10 that it had never been his style. "It's far more money than one person could sensibly spend, it's just a by-product of my work. It does give you a degree of freedom and you have to keep asking: 'How self indulgent am I being?' Not very, probably. Charities, such as Shelter and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature, will see some benefits, though."
