Telegraph to shed 133 jobs as part of new strategy

LONDON - The Telegraph Group has confirmed it is to make 133 job cuts as part of its digital and print integration programme, prompting staff to ballot for strike action.

As reported on Brand Republic earlier this week, The Telegraph is currently moving to new high-tech headquarters in London's Victoria, where it is investing in a multimillion-pound new-media training programme for its journalists.

However, the integration of its digital and print editions to an around-the-clock format will lead to redundancies at the newspaper, because current and future journalists will now be trained in both disciplines.

The new offices at the Victoria Plaza building at 111 Buckingham Palace Road in London's Victoria will include a massive 67,000 square foot open-plan floor, based around a hub layout with a round table at its centre, where the editors will sit, and desks fanning outwards.

The changes and job cuts mean sub-editors will be done away with and replaced by "production journalists", who will work across various platforms with new specialist video journalists being recruited.

It is understood that letters will be sent out to affected staff early next week, detailing that 54 journalists will be made redundant, with an additional 24 administrators and 55 staff from non-specified departments losing their jobs.

Murdoch MacLennan, chief executive of the Telegraph Group, had previously said that the newspaper's aim to move to a seven-day production cycle would incur "some job losses", but the figure now appears to be much higher than first anticipated.

The National Union of Journalists has called a meeting to consider the possibility of balloting for industrial action, but has yet to publicly respond to the redundancies.
