
Cheesborough is replacing Andrew Hickey, who is to leaving the publisher of The Times and The Sun later this year to pursue consultancy work.
Cheesbrough's departure from TMG comes a month after the and digital managing director.
Lewis’ departure has also been followed by the departure of two of his key executives, Chris Lloyd, deputy managing director of TMG, and consulting editor Rhidian Wynn Davies. Lewis had been spearheading TMG’s standalone digital unit in Euston, London.
Cheesbrough is joining News International at a crucial time, as the Rupert Murdoch-owned group moves its quality brands The Times and The Sunday Times this month.
The move contrasts with News International’s national newspaper rivals, which are to continue to deliver free news content online.
Cheesborough will have responsibility for all News International’s technology platforms spanning The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun and the News of the World.
In his new role, Cheesbrough will be responsible for providing and developing the digital infrastructure and services required to support the business in its development into a multimedia, multi-channel news organisation.
He will report to News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks.
Prior to his role at TMG in 2007, Cheesbrough was controller of digital media at the BBC.
