The gallery will use works of art from its collection to inspire five- to 11-year-olds to help produce the film.

The movie will be launched in time for the 2012 Olympics.

The link up will include the launch of workshops to help generate ideas.

A spokesman for the Tate said that every child in Britain can be involved in The Tate Movie.

Funding will come from Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to promote cultural activities in the run-up to the Olympic Games.

Other companies to link up with Aardman include energy supplier Npower and retailer Harvey Nichols.
