Tarantino pulps Idols as he outdoes Cowell's Mr Nasty

LONDON – Cutting into contestants more ruthlessly than Uma Thurman's sword in 'Kill Bill', Quentin Tarantino gave the original Mr Nasty, Simon Cowell, a run for his money when he appeared as a guest judge on 'American Idol' this week.

This perhaps comes as no surprise from the motormouth director of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, who is a long-time fan of the show and particularly of Simon Cowell. Before appearing on the show, Tarantino said that he had been "waiting for this for a while and I'm going to give my two cents' worth".

Tarantino's barbed comments saw one contestant, Jon Peter Lewis, renowned for his dance skills, dubbed a geek: "You are the geekiest rock singer since Freddie and the Dreamers."

Of 16-year-old singer Diana DeGarmo, who sang Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On, he said: "There couldn't be a song we are more sick of hearing. You pulled off the notes and stuff but I don't care." Another 16 year old was told: "You ain't my cup of tea."

Earlier this year the US version of 'Pop Idol' hired a psychiatrist to help contestants deal with Cowell's harsh comments.

Tarantino, who is due for a second appearance on the show, has yet to use any of the famous lines of dialogue from his scripts on contestants, such as the line from 'Pulp Fiction' when the character Marcellus Wallace prepares to torture his assailant with the threat of "getting medieval on your ass."

Meanwhile Cowell has signed a two-year deal to become a new face on ITV. According to The Sun, Mr Nasty will get £1.25m to host a range of entertainment shows.
