SuperGroup, which owns the Superdry, 77Breed and Surfco California brands, has said it will launch five male perfumes in time for Christmas this year, with female fragrances to follow at a later date.

The news comes in the same week that SuperGroup posted a pre-tax profit of £47.3m in the year to 1 May, an increase of 110%.

Julian Dunkerton, chief executive and founder, told the Daily Telegraph that SuperGroup had always planned to move into other areas of retail. It intends to ramp up its accessories lines as part of the expansion.

He said: "It was always part of the strategy to be a global lifestyle brand."

He told the newspaper that Harvey Nichols, the department store chain, claimed the planned launch was the "most exciting fragrance launch since Paco Rabanne in the 1980s".

A spokesman for the group declined to comment on whether it had any plans to use advertising to launch the fragrances, but it said it does not traditionally use advertising to support its products.

In February, SuperGroup bought the company that owns its franchises in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, intending to roll out larger stores on the back of the buyout.
