Supergroup has paid €40m (£33.8) for CNC Collections BVBA, which manages 29 Superdry franchise stores in Europe – 12 owned, and a further 17 sub-franchised.

The brand intends to roll out new and larger stores on the back of the buy-out.

Supergroup, in a group statement, said the purchase would increase margins, and make "possible the creation of owned larger format stores in key locations across Europe".

European sales are expected to exceed €40m (£33.8m), with profits in the region of €8m (£6.7m) in the first 12 months following the buyout.

Julian Dunkerton, chief executive of Supergroup, said: "The acquisition of CNC is a major step in our European growth strategy, allowing us to capture additional gross profit in four key territories, driving our franchise acceleration and opening the possibility of company owned larger format stores in key shopping centres across Europe."

The growth of the Superdry brand has been driven by its adoption by celebrities such as David Beckham, with little advertising investment.

Former CNC owner Luc Clément will join Supergroup as group head of European franchising.
