The listing, which sits outside the News International paywall, will rank socially active consumers according to their activity on the four key social networks – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare.

Sunday Times readers are invited to register for the list. Their social activity will be aggregated and measured to generate a score using an algorithm developed by VCCP.

The algorithm focuses on other people's activity around an individual's postings, rather than raw follower numbers. Users will be encouraged to share their current rank with other networks.

At the site's launch on Friday, Gordon Thomson, online editor of the Sunday Times, said the publisher was "serious about social media" and that while the Rich List "can only be accessed by the monied few, this can be enjoyed by everyone".

The is ranked in real time, and an individual's ranking will be pushed out to their social network once a week.

As well as the overall list of social influence, which is expected to be dominated by celebrities, there is a second, comparative ranking of social media users against those they know.

The Social List will be promoted and published in the Sunday Times' paper edition, as well as online.

Asked how the site would protect users' privacy, Graham Drew, VCCP's head of PR, said users can remain anonymous and control which services they publically link to.
