A storm has gathered around Meier, the subject of torrents of abuse from Sun readers, who were encouraged to email the referee after England lost to Portugal last week when Sol Campbell's headed goal was ruled out.
Meier has said he has received more than 16,000 emails after his address was printed in The Sun and read out on ITV's news programme. He is now under police protection after he says he received death threats.
He told BBC Radio 4's 'PM' programme: "Fans have made mail and the phone calls and so on. I feel very sad about this reaction of the tabloid press, especially after a right decision. A reaction like this after a football game is never the right way."
The Sun published an interview with Meier's ex-wife who accused the ref of being a love cheat after he left her another woman, who also happens to be a referee.
"To me it's not a joke. A lot of English supporters are heated over, it's really dangerous."
The Sun also paid a visit to Meier's home town with a giant England flag, which it laid on the ground outside the referee's office.
Meier's has stood by his decision to disallow the goal, which was not given because the referee said that England defender John Terry had impeded the goal keeper.
"The whole world was seeing that this decision was correct. It was foul play from Campbell. It was foul play from Terry. It was clearly foul play," he said.
