Study warns of equipment shortage over Games period

Research carried out by independent data company Caterlys has shown more than two thirds of events organisers have not considered the Olympics could put a strain on equipment hire.

The study surveyed more than 4,000 event operators. It found almost a third are organising events in and around the Games and are catering for more than 50 people at these events.

But while a third plan to order equipment early, 70% of those surveyed don’t think an equipment shortage will affect their businesses.

Commenting on the research, Chris Irving, managing director of temporary catering equipment provider PKL Group, said: "In any other year, this would not present a problem, but it seems that many operators assume that their first choice of equipment will be there when they need it.

"2012 will see exceptional demands for certain hire items. With only four or five major catering equipment hire companies in the UK, it’s likely that all of us will see shortages of some lines."
