Studio gives film simultaneous retail and Facebook release

Lions Gate has become the first film studio to launch a movie to rent on Facebook on the same day it goes on sale in the home entertainment channel.

From today (17 January), Facebook users in the US will be able to rent 'Abduction' for $3.99 (£2.60) for a 48-hour rental window, as it goes on sale on DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download.

The film rental is paid for using PayPal, rather than Facebook's own virtual currency Facebook Credits, for which it takes a 30% cut of every sale.

Viewers will also have access to an exclusive interview with the film's star Taylor Lautner and take part in a quiz while watching the film on Facebook.

The deal enables Lions Gate to gather viewing information from users watching its titles. It is unknown whether the studio has any other film launches planned for Facebook or if the scheme will roll out globally.

Several movie studios, including Lions Gate, have already trialled movie rentals on Facebook in the US.

, and, in March last year, launched the 'Dark Knight' on Facebook before expanding the service to include 'Harry Potter' films.

Movie rentals in the UK have yet to gain traction, although it is possible to rent Miramax titles on Facebook in the UK.

However, last week Netflix, which launched in the region, , enabling users to share and talk about what movies they are watching with their friends on the social network.
