He replaces Andrew Gillespie, who has left the financial services brand with immediate effect, for "personal reasons". Kelsall will report to Standard Life group chief marketing officer, Simon Gulliford.

The former commercial director for retail banking at Barclays, and product and marketing director at Experian, has been working at Standard Life in a consultancy role since September. Kelsall also operated as a marketing consultant at Santander in 2008.

Earlier this week, Standard Life's Assurance business was fined £2.45m by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) for "serious systems and controls failings" that resulted in misleading marketing for its Standard Life Pension Sterling Fund.

The product was censured for misleading customers over a fund sold as a cash product, despite being more than 50% an investment fund.
