Sorrell warns again about tax exodus from UK

LONDON - Sir Martin Sorrell has again suggested that WPP Group could join the exodus of corporations relocating their headquarters outside of Britain because of concerns over the UK corporate taxation system.

In a report in the Sunday Times Sorrell said that companies like WPP Group could join the growing tax exodus from the UK. He was speaking after office space Regus Group announced it was to quit the UK for Luxembourg.

The announcement followed one by Henderson and Charter on Thursday, which said it was to relocate its headquarters to Ireland. Shire Pharmaceuticals and United Business Media have also said they will quit London.

The WPP chief executive said that despite the public relations issue surrounding a move out of their home country the feeling in the corporate world increasingly favours a move if it is good for business.

"There are major corporates that are concerned about it but there is a public-relations issue here. They don't want to be seen to be letting the country of origin down and that weighs heavily.

"I know a number of companies that don't want to make a public brouhaha about it. I've never known such a deep feeling on an issue like this," Sorrell told the paper.

Sorrell first raised the prospect of a move in April when he said that WPP was considering a move to Ireland in an effort to reduce its tax bill.

WPP wants to cut the £200m a year it pays in tax to chancellor Alistair Darling. A move to Ireland could save WPP more than £100m as companies registered there only pay 12.5% in corporation tax, compared to 28% in the UK.

Sorrell told the Sunday Times that WPP was most worried about proposed changes to what is called the "controlled foreign companies regime". This could give the government even greater tax powers over UK registered companies.

"There is nothing that has been done so far that would alter our view and we continue to review our position and look at the possibility of changing domicile," Sorrell said.
