Sorrell banks £3.6m after base salary rise

LONDON - Sir Martin Sorrell, the WPP Group chief executive, was paid £3.57m last year, an increase of 8.5% on his pay package in 2006.

Most of the increase was accounted for by a £170,000 increase in his base salary to £1,003,000. This is the first increase in his base salary since 1999.

Sorrell was also paid an annual cash bonus of £1.65m, up from £1.61m last year. The performance-related bonus could have been a maximum of £2m.

Another element of his pay was the company's executive share award scheme, up to a maximum of 100% of base salary. This rose from £815,000 in 2006 to £885,000.

In addition, Sorrell was awarded 2.8m WPP shares under a share plan designed in 2004 -- the Leadership Equity Acquisition Plan -- which is measured by the company's performance against its peers over five years.

Sorrell has deferred receipt of these shares until 2011.
