The Rally for Heroes fund raising event is in aid of Help for Heroes and the Royal British Legion. It will take place between 18 and 25 August.

It will take in the Top Gear test track in the UK, Monaco's famous street circuit, Italy’s Stelvio National Park and the Nurburgring Circuit in Germany. The route includes a five-mile drive for every serving soldier who has lost his or her life on duty in Afghanistan.

The event is being organised by Warrant Officer Benn Laidler and Corporal Mick Clark. Both have been on tours to Afghanistan and Iraq.

An impressive 50 drivers have already signed up for the event. Every entrant covers all their own costs so that all funds raised go directly to the charities.

Laidler, who will be taking part in his TVR Tuscan, said he is delighted with the initial response.

"We are already meeting tremendous enthusiasm for the event," he said. "Now the key is to see if we can meet our fundraising target of £100,000. We still have car sticker space and full sponsorship slots available and we are not looking for set levels of donations - any amount people would like to give, big or small, would be wonderful."
