The campaign, created by Lowe London and directed by Frank Budgen, features Frank Sinatra singing 'I've Got You Under My Skin', along with special effects to show fatty deposits making their way through a smoker's body towards his heart.
The campaign has been developed by the British Heart Foundation, following on from the success of Euro RSCG's "dripping fat" advertising. Along with television advertising, there will be internet, outdoor and press ads.
The BHF said that the campaign was based on extensive research with groups of smokers to find the most effective approach to making the link between smoking and coronary heart disease.
Ads taking a similar approach and broadcast in the US, Australia and Northern Ireland have already proved successful in getting the message across to smokers, and even just in research groups run by the BHF some smokers have already decided to give up cigarettes.
The campaign comes as the idea of putting shock pictures of rotten teeth and blackened lungs on the front of cigarette packets are revisited.
The plans are being considered again as the Cabinet today discusses a near total ban on smoking in British pubs.
