Smash Martians to relaunch as nostalgia market grows

LONDON - The Smash Martians are back, with licensing firm KDBC Media hoping to translate their popularity as ambassadors for instant mashed potato products into merchandising opportunities.

The Martians, first introduced in 1974, have been redesigned by Bath-based design agency in preparation for their return to Earth.

The Smash Martians' popularity has not dwindled since they first appeared, with almost 100% awareness among 17- to 34-year-olds of their existence and appearances in charts of the most popular advertising of all time, including 北京赛车pk10's advertising Hall of Fame in 1999.

The Martians, owned by Premier Foods, will be launched as a brand in their own right, appearing on a range of products including clothing, stationery and greetings cards.

Gordon Downie, managing director of KDBC Media, said: "The Smash Martians have the potential to fulfill latent consumer demand for long term, established icons -- the young adult market especially is more than ready."

The Smash Martians were created by BMP and starred in a long-running series of ads. They observed humans and laughed at the way people peeled, boiled and mashed potatoes instead of using instant mash.

The characters became so popular that the advertising agency had literature prepared to send to people who wrote fan mail about the campaign. The Smash Martians have since been revived in two campaigns, one in 1992 and the other in 1999.
