The Smash Martians are to make a comeback as part of an extensive

relaunch of the instant mashed potato brand by its parent company, HL

Foods.

It has yet to be decided whether the metallic-voiced Martians, who were

introduced to the nation by BMP DDB in 1974, will be seen again on

TV.

But they will feature in a print and radio campaign being developed for

the brand by Willox Ambler Rodford Law.

The HL board has to choose between giving TV support to Smash or to its

HP Beans brand. A decision is still a few weeks away.

WARL has been appointed to handle a range of projects for HL Foods,

including some new product development, said Max Law, the agency’s

deputy managing director.

Anthea Harrison, the Smash brand manager, said: ’The support for Smash

in 1999 is the biggest single investment for several years. Smash

already enjoys over 50 per cent market share, and has been brand leader

for over 30 years.’
