Skype provides free software that allows users to talk to each other over the internet. Interest in such services is growing, particularly since Google launched its version of voice-over-internet, called Google Talk.
Reports say that eBay is in talks with Skype, which is privately owned and based in Europe. The Financial Times reports that it has hired Morgan Stanley to advise it on strategic options, including a sale.
The move comes as established companies, both on- and offline, go on the acquisition trail for internet companies in which to invest. News Corporation has been leading the way, with investments including IGN Entertainment and MySpace.com. Yahoo! has also followed suit to expand its presence in China.
Skype has recently flagged its intention to up the ante on its marketing activity, appointing Video Island founder Saul Klein to head its global marketing and hiring the advertising agency Albion to produce a number of viral movies to promote the brand.
