Sky Sports celebrates 20 years of broadcasting

Since its launch in 1991 Sky Sports has been the propelling force behind BSkyB's success and the birth of pay TV in the UK.

There are now five Sky Sports channels, including Sky Sports News, which have broadcast over 537,000 hours of sport in the past 20 years. The broadcaster has HD sports counter parts and in 2010 3D programming was also introduced.

The first live football goal, scored by Teddy Sheringham for Nottingham Forest against Liverpool, was captured by Sky Sports in 1992 and is just one in a long line of "firsts" for Sky.

The first uninterrupted live Ryder Cup was screened by Sky Sports in 1995. The event now attracts more than 300 production staff, stationed at Celtic Manor, during the event.

In 1999 the first interactive sports broadcast was aired, featuring the Arsenal v Man Utd match live from Highbury. In the same year Sky screened the first live football match online with Scotland v England's Euro 2000 qualifier.

Super Bowl XLI became the first US HD broadcast to be screened in UK and Ireland in 2007 and this year all four days of 'The Masters' matches were shown in HD and 3D.
