His departure follows the recent appointment at Sky of Giles Ivey, former Times Media digital commercial director, who took on some of Wright's responsibilities in a restructure.

Ivey was appointed to oversee sales around Sky-branded portals, the role which Wright previously occupied, a move which left Wright with responsibility solely for third-party sales represented by Sky.

The restructure came as Sky looks to enhance its digital offering and ramp up its activity in the increasingly competitive third-party online sales arena.

Sky, which acquired online sports information and gaming firm 365 Media for £96m in 2006, has 180 websites in its portfolio and is a leading content provider, based on reach of internet users.

It has also picked up a range of briefs to handle ad sales for third-party operators such as Johnson & Johnson site Babycentre.co.uk, BT-backed Netmums.com and fashion retailer Asos.com.

Wright joined Sky in 1998 and was one of the first members of its sales team. He left the organisation in 1999 to become director of sales at Sports.com. He then co-founded online sales agency Aura Sports in September 2002, which was sold to Sky in 2006.

Wright, who reports into Andy Jonesco, Sky's managing director of online, returned to Sky in September 2006. He leaves the company with no job to go to.
