Sky Digital to offer AOL interactive TV service

LONDON - News Corporation-owned BSkyB is linking up with rival US media giant AOL Time Warner to bring AOL's flagship internet service to Sky Digital's 6m subscribers.

The deal comes as AOL looks at other ways of providing access to its service, as online subscription rates slow.

The AOL-Sky deal will allow Sky Digital's subscribers to use AOL's instant messaging and email through their TV sets, allowing them to communicate with mobile phone users.

They will also be able access headline news, sport and weather information.

Karen Thomson, chief executive of AOL UK, said: "The launch of AOL on Sky Active offers AOL's members yet another convenient way to access its key services and will broaden the already huge popularity of AOL Instant Messenger."
