Sir Richard Branson latest to take plunge into reality TV

LONDON - Sir Richard Branson, the train, plane and hot air balloon enthusiast, is to front a new reality television show for budding tycoons with the prize of a job in the Virgin empire.

According to a report in The Times, the tycoon is to make the programme for Fox in the US. It has been dubbed 'Branson's Big Adventure' and will run for six weeks with contestants being set a series of challenges each week. They will follow Sir Richard around the world but one of the hopefuls will be left behind at the airport at the end of each episode.

Always with an eye to the chance of free publicity the show will help promote Virgin's airline and mobile telephone businesses in the US.

Will Whitehorn, Sir Richard's spokesman, told The Times: "It's a reality TV that involves Richard basically choosing somebody to join and work in the organisation -- finding an entrepreneur. It will involve a large number of tests for the individuals involved -- psychological, cognitive, physical, moral."

Sir Richard will be following in the footsteps of another billionaire Donald Trump, who hosts a hit reality television programme 'The Apprentice' on NBC. Contestants are competing for a job with a $250,000 salary but each week one is jettisoned with the words "you're fired" -- a phrase that Trump is reportedly trying to copyright.
