SHOPPING REVIEW: Charity begins on the home page

It's a cliche to say that the web can do a lot for charity, but it can, and it increasingly is. From the British Red Cross to Cancer Research UK, the accountability and cost-effectiveness of the internet as a fundraising tool is appreciated by diverse members of the third sector.

Personal fundraisers are also appreciating it and those individuals who dare to do something different on their own for charity can find the web a big help. By using services on the internet such as justgiving (www.justgiving.com), all those marathon runners, parachutists and charity cyclists can collect money without menace, while contributing both tax-efficiently and directly to their favoured causes.

So, when Simon 'Cheese' Cheshire, director of NOP World, contacted Revolution to announce that his new fundraising venture for cancer research had a personal fundraising page, it was an obvious step to head online to make a donation.

Far from dragging round a dog-eared piece of paper, all Cheshire, the modern fundraiser, has to do is send an email with his personal web page address highlighted and a short explanation of the event. The altruist simply has to visit the web site to donate money.

In Cheshire's case, the explanation was rather involved because, rather than simply don some running gear or get hold of a mountain bike to complete his task, he, along with some assorted members of the NOP new-media team, is growing a moustache to raise funds for cancer research.

To help with this story - and provide proof of progress on the path to Tom Selleck-dom - the justgiving page shows off a picture of the ever-more hirsute bunch, updated week by week.

To donate, I simply had to click on the 'sponsor us now' button and input my credit card details.

A list of current donors is prominent - along with the amounts pledged - but in a nice twist you can not only write comments like 'May the fuzz be with you' but also use an anonymous name.

A further click completed a painless way to give. Return visits to the site show my contribution, but also expose me to pictures of men with a closer resemblance to Star Wars favourite Chewbacca than is entirely healthy. May the fuzz be with you, indeed.
