Shing becomes AOL head of media and marketing

LONDON - Internet giant AOL has appointed European marketing director David Shing to the position of head of media and marketing for AOL Europe.

Shing replaces Rohit Agarwal, who elected to take voluntary redundancy and will leave in the summer. He will oversee AOL's content and marketing strategies and will be based in London. He will report to Kate Burns, head of AOL Europe.

In his new role, Shing is responsible for AOL's media content vision and marketing strategy, including online, offline, social and viral partnerships, and its brand and product range. He is also the lead for creative design and key experiences innovation.

He joined AOL in 2007 as European marketing director, reporting to Agarwal, previously spending more than 12 years building successful web technology start-ups and multimedia businesses in the USA and Australia.

AOL US marketing director Eugenia Makhlin has replaced Shing as European marketing director, and will look after both trade and consumer marketing. Makhlin was US marketing director at AOL for a year and worked at Google for five years before that.

Burns said AOL was building "differentiated interactive and original content experiences for consumers" and Shing would play a key role in "leading AOL's drive to become the largest scaled player in world-class, technology-driven content platforms".

Last week, AOL made a number of internal promotions in its senior UK sales team. Toby Morris, Andrew Moore and Robert Blake became head of premium sales, agency sales and performance sales respectively, all reporting directly to Burns.

Following the departure of UK and Benelux managing director Michael Steckler last month, Burns, former Bebo vice-president and managing director of Europe, took on the broader remit to manage AOL's UK business.

AOL Advertising's sales director Sarah Perry also left the business as part of the company's voluntary redundancy programme.
