Shetty wins Celeb Big Brother with 63% of the final vote

LONDON - The voting public threw itself behind Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who romped home to victory in last night's live final of 'Celebrity Big Brother', bringing to a close the most controversial series of the Channel 4 reality show to date.

Registering an unprecedented 63% of the total vote, Shetty quashed the racist controversy that had dogged the series, stating "I just want to thank Great Britain".

She said that she forgave her tormentors, including former 'Big Brother' contestant Jade Goody, former Miss Great Britain Danielle Lloyd and former S-Club singer Jo O'Meara.

An international incident had erupted two weeks ago centring on comments directed at Shetty by the triumvirate, with Goody dubbing Shetty "Shilpa Poppadom", Lloyd suggesting that Shetty should "go home", and O'Meara, who questioned Shetty's cooking and hygiene.

Ironically, Shetty may have saved the media career of at least one of her tormentors. During last night's broadcast, Shetty commented on the subject of racism, saying about Goody: "People make mistakes, I know for sure that Jade didn't mean to be racist. She's a little aggressive, she may be hot-tempered, but she's not a racist."

The show attracted a record number of complaints, with more than 46,000 people complaining to media regulator Ofcom and Channel 4 about racist comments during transmission.

Hertfordshire Constabulary, in whose jurisdiction the Big Brother house sits, has confirmed that they will be investigating "the allegations of racist behaviour inside the Celebrity Big Brother" according to a spokesman.

Former Jackson Five member, and peacemaker in the house, Jermaine Jackson took the runner-up position with Dirk Benedict taking third. Former Steps star Ian 'H' Watkins was voted into fourth place while Lloyd took fifth place and Goody's boyfriend Jack Tweed, was voted into sixth position.

Last week, there were fears that the voting process would be tainted after Channel 4 cancelled thousands of eviction votes because of a human error that resulted in the wrong message being shown on screen in reference to Shetty.

While the voiceover was correct and stated "To vote to evict Shilpa" the on-screen text mistakenly read "To vote to save Shilpa".

Channel 4 is now faced with refunding thousands of calls made by members of the public to premium rate phone lines costing 50p if phoned from a BT line and more if registered through a call from a mobile phone network. The channel will also have to refund the 50p it charges for each text vote, with any revenues from unclaimed calls being made to charity.
