Setanta targets Liverpool fans for subscription drive

LONDON - Setanta Sports is to broadcast an unencrypted free evening of Liverpool FC TV content tomorrow in an attempt to drive the take-up of suscribers to its pay-TV package.

Sky and Virgin Media customers who have yet to sign up to the Setanta Sports pack will be able to watch six hours of Liverpool FC TV tomorrow night, although the first team is not playing a match then.

Sky customers on channel 448 and Virgin Media customers through channel number 544 will be able to see six hours worth of the channel free and unencrypted, from 6pm to midnight.

The newly launched Liverpool FC TV channel is one of nine channels available to Setanta Sports subscribers on satellite.

The free-to-air evening will offer fans a news bulletin from the club's training complex, a programme that previews the club's new stadium plans, near-live highlights from a reserve match, a Champions League game and a look back at famous players and goals.

The initiative preludes three Liverpool games exclusively live on Setanta Sports in November and December, involving Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and Reading.

Liverpool was recently named the most popular Premier League football club in terms of website traffic to the Anfield outfit's official homepage.

A survey conducted by web traffic analysis company Hitwise on the website visits to the country's top 20 football clubs' homepages calculated that Liverpool topped the poll with a 17.3% share of total visits for the week ending August 4.
