A notice of the cancellation was issued on Facebook and Twitter at 3.40pm today (24 July). The Facebook message read: "Urgent message. To all of tonight’s ticket holders, due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to receive guests at tonight's show of Secret Cinema presents Back to the Future.
"We are devastated to make this announcement and sincerely apologise for having to announce it at this late a stage. We are working tirelessly to make sure that this spectacular event will go ahead tomorrow evening."
It also added that ticket holders will be guaranteed entry into one of 12 other dates, and asked them to contact ticket distributor See Tickets to reallocate entry.
Fabien Riggall, founder and creative director at Secret Cinema, also added: "We are working around the clock with the production team to resolve any issues. We are devastated to have to make this announcement, and we appreciate everyone who has made plans for tonight’s event. We are doing everything we possibly can."
According to news website London 24, the preview screening set to take place last night (23 July) was also scrapped one hour before it began.
Many ticket-holders took to social media to vent their frustration at the late notice termination.
One commented: "The people behind this need to take a long hard look at themselves if they think this is decent behaviour," while another said: "Getting a bit of a reputation for these sort of 'unavoidable circumstances', Secret Cinema." The company replied asking guests to put complaints in writing.
