The images, which appear to reveal the event’s location as the Olympic Village in East London, show workers still erecting structures, picking up litter and painting the ground at 7pm, two hours after the event was due to start.
Terry Pateman, a ticket holder and photographer, told Event: "Apparently the set was unfinished, health and safety were not signing off the site, and the screen is unwatchable before dark."
Despite on Facebook and Twitter yesterday afternoon, many ticket holders did not receive the notification as they had been told by the company to leave their mobile phones at home. Crowds arriving at Hackney Wick station, the meet-up point for the secret event, were turned away.
Secret Cinema released a statement at 11pm last night, confirming that ticket holders can either apply for entry at another date or receive a full refund.
The company added: "As most of you know we have proven time and again that we put our hearts into every production. This has been a hugely ambitious endeavour and we are deeply sorry for those of you that planned your weeks around this particular night.
"We know the effort that goes into attending our events and we understand the utter disappointment you are all feeling. We are truly feeling it too."
Another statement regarding tonight’s event is expected to be released this morning.
