Schofield, who co-presents the show with Fern Britton, told BBC Radio 1 this morning that the show's producers would not have allowed Katona to be interviewed if they were aware of her condition before filming.
He said: "She came through the studio, we kissed her on the cheek and the programme went on air, so at no point had we any idea what condition she might be in.
"The last thing I want to do is to witness a car crash in front of my eyes."
Katona's incoherent appearance on yesterday's show led worried viewers to call in.
She struggled to articulate her thoughts and words clearly, which prompted Schofield to enquire about her health, live on air.
Britton pushed the line of questioning about Katona's drinking, referring several times to a recent magazine interview which talks about her drinking on holiday.
Katona blamed her behaviour on prescription medication and her husband, Mark Croft, later posted a statement online saying that Katona was "upset at the insinuation that she was on anything other than prescription drugs".
Katona, who is a spokeswoman for budget supermarket Iceland, was also grinding her teeth. The video of her appearance has been posted on YouTube and has been viewed more than 500,000 times.
ITV1 devoted a section of today's 'This Morning' programme to discussing the interview and the media reaction to it.
The hosts directed a message at Katona and Croft, saying that they never intended to upset the former Atomic Kitten singer.
They said: "We are just concerned for you [Kerry], because you're bubbly, you're funny, you're beautiful, you're quick-witted -- all of those things, and we can't bear to see you not looking like the Kerry we know."
Katona appeared on 'This Morning' to promote her new MTV1 documentary 'Whole Again', which follows her as she spends £15,000 to regain the figure she had before giving birth to four children.
