The Samsung service, which launches today, will allow viewers to stream 20 free 3D films free via its Smart TV platform, supplied by its studio partner Dreamworks. It is the first free 3D streaming service.

Viewers will be able to view content via a special Explore 3D app. Samsung aims to extend the service to 70 free titles by the end of the year.

Andy Griffiths, VP for consumer electronics, Samsung UK, said: "The demand for 3D is growing rapidly, but only a handful of channels are providing content. We believe that in the near future every viewer will have access to 3D content in the comfort of their own living room through a Smart TV."

3D TV owners subscribing to Virgin Media's M+, L and XL TV packages will be able to view the French Open on Eurosport channel 523, for free with selected matches available on demand as part of the XL TV package. The tournament runs from 22 May until 5 June.

In addition the Wimbledon tennis tournament will be filmed in 3D by Sony, in partnership with the BBC.

Samsung, last week, signed a deal with Channel Five for a new internet TV app, and has enlisted David Beckham to be the face of its Olympics activity.
