Samsung gives TVs web access via Yahoo! widgets

LONDON - Yahoo! is pushing for the web to become part of the television viewing experience with a new deal for web applications on Samsung televisions coming out in the spring.

Samsung gives TVs web access via Yahoo! widgets

Select models in Samsung's 2009 flat-panel HDTV line-up will be powered by the Yahoo! Widget Engine, which enables TV watchers to interact with web content and services through their remotes.

The ‘Internet@TV' service will let users browse headline news, videos, share photos and interact with friends. Users can access the service by connecting the HDTV to a home network.

The Yahoo! TV Widgets include Flickr, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Weather and Yahoo! Finance and third-party content from YouTube and eBay. The content and services offered will grow to include video streaming and other popular internet services.

Samsung has been promoting internet-enabled TV technology with the launch of its InfoLink service last year.
