
The survey, which was conducted among members of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and marketing professionals in May and June, also showed that 27% of respondents are forecasting a 4% to 6% pay boost next year.
There is good news for graduate marketers, too; at £23,500, their annual salary is up 6.8% on last year's average. There has also been a positive shift in the pay gap between men and women at marketing director level. Women now earn only 7.3% less than men in this role, down from last year's -18.8% and -10% two years ago.
There is less to get excited about for marketing managers in the West Midlands, however, who earn 10% less than their peers in London. A middle ranking marketing manager in the West Midlands is paid on average £30,000 compared with £33,209 in London.
Despite the furore surround bonuses in the financial sector, 43% of marketing directors received a bonus averaging £13,000, 17% of their basic pay. However, for lower-ranked marketers, the value of bonuses has fallen.
While there have been job losses in the sector, 88% feel their job security is ‘fair to excellent' and 53% describe their job satisfaction as ‘good' or ‘excellent'; 90% believe their pay is in line with or above the market.
The average marketing spend shown in the survey is 1.4% of turnover, down slightly on last year's 1.5%. The biggest spenders on marketing were publishers at 8% of turnover, charities at 5% and the food industry at 3%.
According to the research, senior and middle managers who are members of the CIM are paid between 2% and 12% more than equivalent non-members.
