Sainsbury's opened Fresh Kitchen in London's Fleet Street January, selling hot and cold takeaway food.

According to a report in the Financial Times, the supermarket intends to roll out Fresh Kitchen across 200 UK sites.

The lunchtime sandwich market is poised to become the next battle ground for the major supermarkets with Morrisons and Asda also considering smaller format stores.

Sainsbury's expansion would pit it against the likes of Pret A Manger, Eat, and Costa Coffee, which is undertaking a major push into the sector.

A spokesman for Sainsbury's said: "Fresh Kitchen is a trial concept in one store in Fleet Street. We do not have a view as to its future potential, as it is still in the very early days of trial."
