The grocery giant launched Wines Direct nationwide, offering customers the chance to purchase wine online and have it delivered to their homes.
Separately, in April this year the store launched its Collect service across eight stores in England and Scotland, which allowed customers to do their shopping online and pick it up later from stores.
However, the wine service stopped in August when the company Safeway used to deliver the wine was taken over.
The company said it has reviewed the success of the Collect trial and decided it would be too expensive to extend it further.
A Safeway spokewoman told Ananova: "We had a review of both areas after the end of the Wines Direct partnership and at that stage it was decided not to inject any extra funds and redirect these resources into the core business.
"It wasn't a reflection of how successful either were, but that to take them forward would need a large cash injection."
News of the website closure comes on the heels of rival Sainsbury's announcement last week that it is doubling investment in its Sainsbury's to You online delivery service to £29m.
However, Safeway said it still operates a "popular website which enables customers to order Christmas food."
