Rugby World Cup loses allure among UK audience

Public interest in the Rugby World Cup (RWC) has declined by almost half since England won the 2003 tournament, according to sports consulting and research agency Sport+ Markt.

The survey, which questioned UK residents aged 16-69, indicates that in the year following England's 2003 RWC victory, interest in the tournament stood at 51%. However, following disappointing results by the home nations and little media exposure, that figure has fallen to 23%. By comparison, interest among those in the host nation France has remained at 50%.

The drop in interest is surprising as overall participation in the sport since the last RWC has risen by 13%, according to the Rugby Football Union (RFU).

The RFU hopes to reverse the fall in interest through the launch of its 'Go play rugby' initiative, which aims to tempt former players back into the game.

The 2007 RWC kicks off this Friday in St Denis, when France takes on Argentina.
