Royal Mail redundancies costing £564m at half way

LONDON - The Royal Mail is understood to have racked up costs of 拢564m in redundancy and retirement payments, just half way through its restructure, which is being led by chairman Allan Leighton.

The company, which is being streamlined to help it become more competitive as the UK postal market opens up to competition, is aiming to axe 30,000 jobs from its 220,000 staff.

Staff are being given generous severance packages, according to reports, with some managers being offered sums of between six months' and a year's salary in addition to a lump sum for taking voluntary redundancy or retirement.

It is thought the attractive packages are being awarded to help placate the postal unions, the Communications Workers Union and the communication workers section of Amicus.

The Royal Mail has already axed 100 sales and marketing posts by combining its sales and marketing operations. It has slashed its marketing budget by as much as 拢20m as another way of reducing costs.

So far the postal operator is understood to have reduced losses from 拢1m a day to 拢750,000 a day. However, it could make as many as a further 25,000 redundancies, expected at middle and senior manager level, as it attempts to break even.
