Publicis is sponsoring his sabbatical to join the London Business School's Sloan Masters MSc programme. The course is intended to equip managers in their 30s and 40s for the most senior positions in business and industry.
On his return next September Hytner is expected to be offered an expanded role at the group.
Hytner's responsibilities at Publicis will be shared by Grant Duncan, the managing director, Gerry Moira, the executive creative director, John Wisbey, the group chief executive of Publicis Dialogue, and Derek Morris, the chief strategic officer.
Maurice Levy, the Publicis chairman, said: "I've some idea of what Richard will do when he comes back but a lot can happen in a year."
