A member of the public complained to the Advertising Standards Authority after receiving a mailing from Rias addressed to his dead father.
It read: "We recently supplied you with a quote for your home insurance. At that time, you told us that your car insurance was due for renewal in May..."
He complained that Rias could not have contacted his father recently and that Rias was using an out-of-date database because the postcode on the mailing had been changed more than 10 years previously.
Rias admitted it had given the home insurance quote in 1998 and should not have used the word "recently". It started a review of the content of its mailings.
It said it was a mistake that it had an old postcode for the address. This meant that it was not picked up by its deceased suppression file, which had the complainant's father's address but with a new postcode.
