The RFL is looking for a single agency to handle its broadcasting services as well as incorporate new media opportunities including online, Wap, 3G and other mobile phone technologies.
The agency will be responsible for worldwide rights sales and negotiating new broadcast deals for the RFL and the Engage Super League, including the prestigious knock-out competition The Challenge Cup, which is currently broadcast live nationally on BBC.
The brief requires agencies to demonstrate an ability to generate increased coverage of rugby league in more countries around the world as part of the RFL's international development goals.
Paul Kimberley, commercial director of the RFL, said: "Putting our media requirements out to tender will allow us to embrace all the new broadcast opportunities now available and will allow us to broadcast rugby league to the widest possible audience and ultimately help the growth of the sport.
He added: "Key competitions such as the Challenge Cup receive huge TV audiences in the UK, but it is important that the successful agency is able to help us expand International coverage as well."
The Challenge Cup, rugby league's top game, competition generates an audience in excess of 10m. This year's final is set to take place at the new Wembley Stadium on August 25.
The tender document is being circulated to relevant organisations including incumbent TWI.
