Janet Scardino, former senior vice-president of international marketing at AOL, has been hired to the new position of executive vice-president and global head of marketing at Reuters Media. Based in New York, she will lead Reuters' brand marketing strategy as it aims to grow its consumer and news provision businesses.
At AOL, Scardino was responsible for marketing the online business in 16 countries. She was previously at Disney as managing director of the Disney Channel in Italy and has held a number of marketing roles in a 10-year career with MTV.
Her appointment follows a series of developments at Reuters' consumer services business, which is focusing on digital channels to boost sales. These include an overhaul of Reuters' consumer sites, the appointment of a new online editor and a move to trial interactive TV through Microsoft's Media Center PCs.
The strategy also prompted Reuters' first ever ad campaign last November, a poster and press push that promoted the company's consumer sites.
It comes as Reuters CEO Tom Glocer continues a major cost-cutting programme at the global news and information group, labelled Fast Forward, which hopes to save a total of £440m by the end of next year.
