Retail choice: Gizmondo, Regent Street, London

If you're not a gamer, you may not have heard of Gizmondo.

It's a multifunction handheld gaming device, a bit like the Sony PSP, if not in anything like the same league. Reviews seem unanimous in saying it stands little chance of breaking into this very competitive market - something it has in common with its flagship store.

After battling my way through the crowds down Regent Street on Saturday, I was relieved to walk into a futuristic-looking store that was empty.

But the fact there were no customers said a lot about Gizmondo. The store felt like a cheap sci-fi show set. Steel floors, space-age lighting, black-and-white interior and a wall of TV screens at the back. Gangsta rap was being pumped out in the background; a few hoodie-wearing teenagers had now joined me.

This store is dedicated to selling the Gizmondo gadget, but like the product, the store felt a bit second-rate. I wandered down to the basement, to a particularly depressing relaxation area. There was a big screen, some uncomfortable-looking bubble-shaped chairs and a pathetic coffee bar. But again, no customers. The final straw was when I asked an assistant to give me an overview of the product. Embarrassed, he explained that they were out of stock.

So, if you're on Regent Street and fancy checking out some cool gadgets, my tip would be to walk past Gizmondo and try the Apple Store instead.
