Reed plans IDMF-linked digital show after Internet World split

LONDON - The International Direct Marketing Fair, which started today, was hit by controversy when it was announced that show organiser Reed Exhibitions is to go 'head to head' with Internet World organisers CMP and launch a new digital show to co-locate with the IDMF in 2009.

The company says the move is in response to CMP's decision to relocate Internet World, which currently runs alongside IDMF at Earls Court 2 exhibition hall in London, to a bigger venue in 2009.

However, CMP said it had wanted to continue with the IDMF partnership but that a request for more space at Earls Court 2 had been turned down by Reed.

Reed's new event, unveiled this afternoon, will be called the Ecommerce and Digital Marketing Expo and will sit alongside IDMF at Earls Court 2.

"We're really disappointed that CMP has decided to take their show to Olympia," said Chris James, IDMF exhibition director. "The last three years of co-location have been great and exhibitors in both shows are not happy about the split. So we've decided to compete head on and launch ECDM."

The new show, along with IDMF, will run from April 28-30 2009, at exactly the same time as Internet World.

Before the new show was announced, news of the IDMF's split with Internet World was greeted with dismay by some exhibitors.

Mark Roy, chief executive of the REaD Group, which has sponsored a theatre at this year's event, described the news as "quite worrying".

"In the past two years the exhibition has seen a steady return to what it used to be," he said. "Digital is an inextricable part of DM and the fit between the shows is extremely good."

Another exhibitor said that news of IDMF's planned move would put extra pressure on this year's show. "Unless this year's event is really good, you'd be tempted to look at other options."

Simon Mills, Internet World event director, said the digital show's exhibitor numbers had grown 15%on last year. "Internet World has grown considerably over the last three years and we don't have enough space in this hall," Mills said. "Reed won't give us a bigger share of the hall so we have to move."

Doors opened for the two events at 9.30am this morning.
