Record Christmas for online retail with traffic up 23%

LONDON – The internet retail sector has recorded its strongest performance for the Christmas season to date, with traffic up 23% on December 2003.

According to research, the market share of all UK internet traffic increased from just over 10% in August to over 12% in December.

The top 20 online retail sites for December included eBay with a 29.7% share, Amazon with an 7.6% share, and Kelkoo and Argos joint third with a 2.4% share.

Computer and electronics chains Currys, Comet and PC World also fared well, accounting for around 1% each.

The most popular Christmas gift was a portable MP3 player, with the iPod and various imitators flying out of stores. As such, the traffic to iTunes and Napster saw a massive peak on Christmas Day by more than 500% and 150% respectively, as users rushed to download new music.
