Rajar figures show rise in DAB take-up and mobile phone radio

LONDON - Take up of DAB digital radio has increased by 35 per cent year on year during Q4 2008, according to the latest Rajar figures, which show that almost 30 per cent of UK adults live in a household with a DAB set.

Combined radio listening via all digital platforms was up 10 per cent year on year and in Q4, 18.3 per cent of all radio listening was done via a digital platform.

DAB listening accounted for 11.4 per cent of listening share, up from 9.9 per cent in Q4 2007, while digital TV accounted for 3.2 per cent of all radio listening. Internet listening share was 2 per cent, up from 1.9 per cent in Q4 2007.

Mobile phone radio listening has grown sharply, with the number of adults (15+) who claim to have listened to radio via mobile phone up 32 per cent from 9.4 per cent in Q4 2007 to 12.3 per cent in Q4 2008.

The rise was particularly steep in the 15 to 24-year-old demographic, 31.1 per cent of whom say they have listened to radio in this way – an increase of 39 per cent year on year. 

Overall, combining both analogue and digital, radio listening was up by around 400,000 to a high of 45.5 million listeners per week, or 90 per cent of the UK population.
