Radio Times gets 'Doctor Who' treatment for Christmas

LONDON – Radio Times is putting the 'Doctor Who' Tardis on its Christmas edition front cover -- the first time it has used a non-Christmas related image for its best-selling issue of the year.

The cover, due to be unveiled next Tuesday, will feature a snow-covered Tardis instead of the usual festive images of Santa Claus, Christmas trees and snowmen that have dominated the cover for the past 82 years.

The cover will give the BBC One 'Doctor Who' Christmas special extra publicity. The episode, called 'Christmas Invasion', will see 'Casanova' star David Tennant, who took over as the 10th Time Lord at the end of the last series, make his mark in the role alongside his assistant Rose, played by Billie Piper.

BBC Worldwide is also embarking on the magazine's first national television ad campaign as well as below-the-line activity.

The TV ads, which promote the magazine's free 'Chronicles of Narnia' CD, launch on December 6 -- the same day of the worldwide premiere of 'The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch and The Wardbrobe'.

As part of the nationwide campaign, six-sheet Radio Times posters will be displayed outside selected supermarkets in the run-up to Christmas.

Kathy Day, Radio Times publisher, said: "We have, without doubt, the best Christmas magazine package available and the investment in above- and below-the-line advertising is guaranteed to delight readers and advertisers alike."
