RAB announces shortlist for Radio Advertising Awards

LONDON - The shortlist for the Radio Advertising Awards has been announced, with WPP's MediaCom and creative agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO each receiving five nominations.

This year, the RAB has introduced the £1m Aerials Creative Challenge, which will award £500,000 of radio airtime to an existing radio advertiser and £500,000 for the best new radio ad.

Interpublic media agency UM, formerly Universal McCann, received three nominations - for best use of radio to drive awareness (Intel), best use of radio to drive consideration (UPS) and best use of radio to drive response (UPS).

The winners, including a Grand Prix for most outstanding entry and media agency of the year, will be announced at the awards ceremony on 17 September.

The event is being hosted by Absolute Radio's Christian O'Connell at The Room on London's South Bank.

The Department for Transport has four nominations, three entered by Leo Burnett and one by AMV BBDO, while Initiative for Orange and Mediaedge:cia for Volvic each have two nominations.

Anna Pennington, project director, Radio Advertising Awards, RAB, said: "The scale of entries in terms of quantity and quality surpassed expectations and previous years."

She said there had been a "really good cross-section" of competition entries, from "really big brands", niche companies, newer advertisers, "smaller independent" agencies and the big networks.

Saatchi & Saatchi is nominated in both the existing and new categories, while W&K, DLKW, RKCR/Y&R, Leo Burnett, Eardrum, AMV BBDO, Inferno and Leagas Delaney all have one shot at the airtime.
